Scarlet Descent

Chapter 77 - Scarlet Upgrade

"Now that I’ve reached the third state, the activity and control of my blood threads seem to have improved significantly."

"Does this mean I can now remember a third basic ability from another system?"
"And within the Scarlet System, the ability I just gained is..."
"Touching the Soul?"
"..."
How could such an ability come into existence?
Amidst the dense murmurs and dreamlike, illusory images, Wei Wei immersed himself in the world of the blood sea, feeling the subtle changes within him. He didn’t know how much time had passed before he suddenly opened his eyes. Blood threads appeared and disappeared rapidly within his gaze.
Even the training camp had no records regarding the growth and extension of abilities within the Scarlet System.
Thus, Wei Wei had no idea what abilities he would gain after ascending to the Third State of Scarlet.
What he did know was that according to the classification standards of other demon systems, he had now ascended from a Scarlet Executor to a Scarlet Mentor.
At this moment, while sensing the changes in his Scarlet Power, he still lacked a clear concept of what it entailed. He could only rely on his perception of this power to analyze and associate based on his self-awareness:
Could it be that slaughter targets only the physical body, but when elevated into an art form, it can inspire, shock, and even intimidate others, affecting their minds and spirits? Is that why I’ve gained the ability to influence mental states and thoughts?
A surge of joy filled his mind.
It was a peculiar sensation, the changes in Scarlet Power weren’t defined by rigid words but instead directly impacted his spiritual perception.
It felt as though he had suddenly acquired a new skill but needed to develop and practice it himself.
It was like suddenly growing an extra hand. Whether to use this hand for hitting people, holding objects, or learning useful crafts depended entirely on one’s own will. This was exactly how Wei Wei felt about this newfound dimension.
He slowly raised his palm, observing his fingers under the first rays of sunlight. Truly...
...huh, had he never noticed how long his fingers were before? Maybe he was born to play piano!
Wei Wei realized deeply that perhaps he’d always had an artistic side, it just hadn’t been developed until now.
However, the imagined scene of blood threads emerging directly from his fingertips didn’t happen.
Blood threads only activated when utilizing basic abilities like Slaughter Intuition  or Death Threat . To imbue weapons or other objects with blood thread power required an open wound.
He raised his hand and bit into his finger; as blood flowed out, delicate blood threads wriggled forth, a sight both eerie and beautiful.
Fortunately, thanks to the Cellular Vitality  ability from the Life Demon, his body bore far fewer scars than it otherwise would have.
Narrowing his eyes slightly, Wei Wei quietly experienced this sensation.
The blood threads felt more sensitive and precise than before, a strange intuition told him that they might now be able to touch not only physical entities but also intangible mental forces.
Perhaps this was the fundamental change brought about by upgrading Scarlet Power? Instinctively looking at the human-head ornament hanging on his wall, Wei Wei felt an urge to discuss this with it. However, the poor thing had fainted last time and hadn’t woken up since.
In that case, he’d have to find some experimental subjects himself. Perhaps visiting haunted places rumored to be ghost-infested would yield cooperative "partners." Many demon systems benefited from extensive prior research and analysis, new abilities came with established benchmarks and references to help users quickly understand and master them. Some even came pre-named!
But not for him, Wei Wei could only work hard to sense changes in his power while experimenting whenever opportunities arose. Taking a deep breath, Wei Wei retrieved a Knowledge Demon Serum, he’d prepared earlier from beneath his sofa.
He could clearly feel that with increased activity in his Scarlet Power, there was now room for an additional remembered ability beyond Cellular Vitality from Life Demons and Death Aura from Death Demons.
The Knowledge Demon Serum, prepared in advance for dealing with wandering sects, could finally be put to use before it expired. After calming himself down further, Wei Wei slotted the serum into an injector.
Before proceeding... he got up suddenly and put on freshly washed SpongeBob underwear hanging nearby.
Hopefully I don’t end up remembering something useless...
He thought, this was a time when luck mattered most... "Shhh!"
As soon as the serum was injected, an invisible force surged into him.
Wild yet intangible, it felt like some strange psychic power trying to tear apart his thoughts completely.
Wei Wei, long accustomed to enduring pain, silently endured as usual.
He sensed how this new force seemed intent on shredding through his blood threads, but those threads feigned helplessness while letting it rampage freely.
Just as this force began asserting dominance over him, the Scarlet Power suddenly revealed its true ferocity: swiftly entangling itself around this intruding energy before devouring it entirely without mercy, transforming it into part of itself.
In that instant, the Scarlet Power surged again, and Wei Wei’s eyes snapped open.
Within them flowed endless streams of data... "Beep-beep!"
On a small LCD screen attached to the metallic injector tube, numbers began flashing:
"Knowledge Demon Magnetic Field Radiation Detected..."
"Warning: Unknown powerful magnetic field detected, activity level at 92%. Record and upload?"
"..."
“Hoo…”
Wei Wei reached out to turn off the alarm, his expression tinged with excitement.
Consciousness Bullet.
He had just remembered the Knowledge Demon System’s basic ability: Consciousness Bullet.
Wei Wei had firsthand experience with this ability during his confrontation with the combat nuns. This power allowed him to project a fragment of his consciousness into an opponent’s mind through eye contact, mingling it with their own thoughts.
The greater the disparity between the strength of their minds and wills, the more effective this ability became.
For example, during his previous battle, a one-eyed nun from the combat team had used this ability on him. The implanted thought was: “Stand here and don’t move.”
At that time, Wei Wei had only needed half a second of focus to break free. However, if the nun’s willpower and rank had far exceeded his own, that simple command could have immobilized him for several minutes, or even hours.
Against stronger beings, perhaps even legendary Totems, this ability could potentially keep Wei Wei rooted in place until death. Useful!
Wei Wei immediately concluded in his mind.
This power could be applied in killing... no, in work. It would undoubtedly prove highly effective in certain situations. “You really have to admire them…” he thought.
Other systems always seemed to have such flashy and versatile abilities compared to his Scarlet Power, which was solely focused on slaughter and nothing else...
A disdainful smile crept onto his lips as he glanced down at the metallic injector tube, only to notice something alarming. Why is my demonic activity level so low?
It had been at 98% earlier, now it had suddenly dropped to 92%.
They always said that after completing an ascension ritual, there would be a significant drop in demonic activity levels...
...and indeed, it was substantial.
Still, it was better than what he’d endured back at training camp when his instructor had forcibly injected him with stabilizers. That time, two stabilizer doses had nearly driven his activity level below 80%, leaving him utterly dejected. Taking a deep breath, Wei Wei put away the metallic injector and turned his gaze toward the bloodstained white shoes hanging by his door.
Looking down at his fingers, he seemed to feel the lingering sensation of that pinky promise with those small hands... The same mentor…
The bloom of the Blood-Flesh Rose?
Images began surfacing in Wei Wei’s mind, memories from that small monastery where he had fulfilled his duties. The grotesque sacrificial flesh, the accompanying “tick-tock” sound, and its near-maddened accusations and roars directed at him.
At the time, he’d been too preoccupied with unfinished work to dwell on such chaotic thoughts. Only now did he begin piecing things together.
After all, he was much calmer now, his demonic activity level had dropped by six percentage points... “So... there really are secrets in Scrap Iron City that have been brewing for three years.”
“And these secrets are indeed tied to my experiences three years ago?” Taking another deep breath, Wei Wei’s mind once again conjured up the image of that scarlet rose :
"The Blood-Flesh Rose... Life Demon sacrificial site... God’s Death Knell... the missing Father An …and that high-ranking Life Demon entity claiming we share the same mentor..."
"Even the Foundation letting me return so easily, could there be an ulterior motive?" Everything seemed like fragmented information waiting to be pieced together, but due to missing key points, it remained incomplete. “But that’s okay...”
A gentle smile spread across Wei Wei’s face as he raised his right hand, his pinky lightly extended as if making a promise to someone unseen. "I don’t know what you’re doing, but I know what you’ve already done."
"I also know they can’t be saved anymore, they all died in their greatest pain and fear."
"You ambitious people never see lambs as anything more than tools, but I’m one of those lambs too."
"I’ll find you for them..." "I hope you understood the artwork I left behind for you."
"Because..."
A joyful and expectant smile lit up Wei Wei’s face:
"Blood-Flesh Rose... it’s enough to know you truly exist. Artist Wei Wei is coming for you soon..."
